I am pleased to make my book, Customs and Culture of Vietnam, available to our web visitors free of charge. The book was first published in 1966 by the Charles E. Tuttle Company and went into more than 15 printings. I am the copyright owner.
Since that time, it has been pirated at least twice, once in Taiwan and also in Vietnam. You might believe that would have made me angry, but, quite frankly, I was amused by it thinking that at least I had written something worth stealing! It was the first book I wrote during my long career as a journalist. My mother was very proud, indeed.
The original book has not been updated. As you read it here, it is the same book that was published in 1966. Please keep that in mind as you read it. My hope is that it will help you find the country of Vietnam as interesting as I did, even though I was only able to write about South Vietnam at the time. Customs and Culture of Vietnam was written especially to fill the void of information that existed at the time. Our primary readers were troops on orders to Vietnam and school children.
I hope that this special web edition of Customs and Culture of Vietnam will be of special interest to those whose family immigrated to the United States from Vietnam after the war. These immigrants are truly treasures to the United States. I would not want their descendants to ever lose the customs and culture of Vietnam.
